Kensei opens with a beautifully unique citrus blast of Blood Orange, Yuzu, and Yellow Mandarin. It is light, juicy, tangy and undeniably uplifting. The sweet and crisp Nashi pear adds to this energizing and delectable opening.
The fresh open transforms with the rich complexity of Lapsang Suchong tea. The uniqueness of this tea cannot be overstated. The tea is smoke dried over pine wood creating an effect that adds a hint of wood smoke and resin to the depth of black tea. The floral combo of Neroli and Violet keep the fragrance light and fresh extending the lift from the citrus open.
An exotic mix of black pepper and saffron create a luxurious creamy, warm spiced effect that leads into a comforting woody finish.
In the shave soap we boosted the Blood Orange note and the spice accord with a Madagascar Ginger.

I’m so happy that Gentleman’s Nod has been releasing these high quality, unique scent profile sets. Also the artwork is always beautiful. Kensei is similar to Musashi to me but they are definitely unique enough from each other to own both. This scent is fantastic! Citrusy/calming tea scent with a little bit of a dark resinous note that balances the fragrance beautifully. Trust me, you will be wanting the fragrance for this set after you smell it.
To begin, the C4+ base is excellent, especially the post shave skin conditioning. Combined with the splash the post shave experience lasts throughout the day.
However, to me the scent falls short of the description and expectations. I don’t get any of the citrus at all. Instead a get a rather unpleasant scent of “damp grass clippings “ combined with the aroma of a bag of “homegrown “ circa 1983. Not what I expected.
In the end, the performance is superior, but the scent is disappointing. I will also add that the scent in the splash is closer to the description.
